The positive takeaway is this quote:
“Dignity, rather than diversity, is the foundation for building work environments that acknowledge and value the humanity of each person. It is the cornerstone upon which organizations can create environments based in belonging and justice.”
It drew me to read the article.
However, Im still pondering what I will say about the article writ large. My initial impression is significant disappointment at a missed opportunity to say something different.
I find a slightly different take on inclusion is helpful. Thinking in terms of synonyms and near synonyms helps identify the nuances of non-diversity, injustice, and exclusion and of DEI. This pulls away from the legalism of tokenism, etc. and points toward the broader goals of what we hope to accomplish, workplaces with dignity, belonging, respect, fairness, and lack of abusiveness. The terms in DEI are a helpful framework for remembering the basics, but it does not address the subtle challenges to overcome.
