Congratulations, great article. Very useful. Ethics is more and more a moral global number one issue. We should strengthen national and international watchdog organizations created and supported by nonprofits to keep an eye on procedures and ethical codes. Citizens around the world are fed up of accountability wrongdoing. Examples are everywhere (look at Britain). Stanford could organize the first international conference on ethics and accountability issues for nonprofits and social investments. Give it a thought. Best regards,

Ethics is a self centred and intrinsic behaviuor that one has grown up with ( a culture of doing the right things for the right reasons)it must be entrench in one’s personality and must be valued by the self individual. It is not learnt when one is working in an organisation whether Government or civil society. One’s up bringing and self dertermination towards being emphathetic on things that matter are very fundamental to ethics. In short compliance to our parents or guardians should play a major factor to influence the outcome of what ethics should be in the society.
I wonder if someone might be able to provide me with some leads for additional information regarding whistleblower policies and how to prove and frame retaliatory dismissal issues from a not-for-profit institution for exposing definitely unethical and perhaps illegal donor gift management.
Additionally my personal ethical issue is that I want to confront this organization for compensation regarding retaliatory dismissal BUT how do I do that without accepting compensation in “exchange” for keeping quiet. I am certain I will be asked not to disclose what I know in order to be compensated. I deserve and need to be compensated. I also don’t want “hush” money.
Ethics and values are what guides your behavior when no one’s watching and you don’t think anyone’s going to find out. what happens when people do things on the edge, is eventually they crossed the line…
That was a well written amazing article. I can tell a lot of effort went into it. I’m in the process of starting a paper for ethics in accounting. does anyone have any websites or authors they recommend?
My theoretical knowledge of ethics is limited to a humanities course I had to do in college and a book I read on ethics many years later. However, since my work involves managing teams, handling sensitive company data, the concept of ethics does cross my mind frequently. Corporations do spent big money on retaining top executives and that’s a requirement for success in the market. A churn in CEO position is very different from a assembly line worker not showing up for work. The vision, focus of a company depends on the top executives and so they can get away with perks here and there. Where do we draw the line on those perks? That’s up for debate but I would say that as long as a publicly traded company keeps the perks public too, it should be fine.
Different people have varying strengths of their moral compass. While some employees may engage in an unethical behavior to please the boss, a lot will stand up and draw the line. The companies are morally responsible for their actions and should (and they do) do a good job at setting out the guidelines. My previous company where I worked in sales, had a 6 page document on what gifts or perks one can and can not accept from potential customers. Your article has highlighted the issue of ethics in Non-profits really well. I can see how sometimes these issues can differ from working in a for-profit organization.
a tradition of doing the appropriate issues for the appropriate reasons it should be entrench in one’s character and should be valued by the self particular person. It is not learnt when one is working in an organisation whether or not authorities or civil society. One’s up bringing and self dertermination in direction of being emphathetic on issues that matter are very basic to ethics. in brief compliance to our dad and mom or guardians ought to play a significant issue to affect the result of what ethics ought to be within the society.
Wonderful article on ethics in the non-profit organization. I was just let go due to ‘re-organizing’ of the non-profit program. I find it quite appropriate to be ‘let go’ due to the fact of a recent ethical discussion with upper management. Reading this article has been very insightful and provides promise that unethical programs do fall short of their needs within time. Society relies on programs that can assist the homeless, hungry and multiple other needs, but when the unethical issues arise, everyone is anxious of what to do. Again, thank you for your article as it truly comforts my uneasiness!
There are several companies which come under the non profit organization’s list the good thing is that they are not running after money in the age where companies leave no chance of cashing in money from the customers. These non profit organizations should be applauded for their good work, I was working for one such company, called Bertelsmann. It was an excellent company and I had a great experience with them.

Is having a fake member of a non-profit’s Board of Directors constitute unethical practice? What would the organization or individual be liable for if it is?
This article is awesome, and I hope all organizations, especially non-profits understand the importance of these issues. Society as a whole is finally becoming more concerned with issues like the ones mentioned in this article, and organizations that are not fulfilling the moral and ethical standards needed to serve our society are finally beginning to be held accountable for their actions. 😊
I feel these issues are just go to increase as our society becomes more diverse because most minority populations have a strong sense of social responsibility.
Thank goodness for diversity and cultural shifts 😊
This articles very good and gives scholarly views on how non-profits should carry their activities in a more transparent way so that they wins public trust.
Best regards keep up with the good work

Who do you contact when a Board of Directors is acting unethical? They are trying to close a 501c3 in order to take the assets, which is a 950k building and an education trust with a little over 600k. One of the Board of Directors is very powerful in our area and no one seems to want to go against him. We don’t seem to find the answer of how to stop this from happening.
I am receiving some house renovations from a Non-Profit group here in the Myrtle Beach area to my house in Andrews, SC. My house was left 2 weekends and 6 working days to the elements, and now a storm is supposed to be on the way. I simply asked for all the paperwork that I signed and know that my house is supposed to be the only one being fixed by the contractor they assigned. You would have thought I created WW3, because I actually believed that what I signed would actually be upheld. There were several mistakes that I caught the slugs the contractors forced on my home without supervision, and when I brought it up, I was the worthless one who dare defy them when this is through the government for 20 years. I’m so disheartened and have 2 autistic kids with insulation falling on their heads for over 2 weeks from the attic in a newer bathroom. Ur article seems to be the lone wolf on the internet. Any advice ?
The problem at nonprofits of having little respect for the people they serve is a persistent problem
As a former employee at some of the top non-profits in New York City, I am amazed how the nonprofits and their employees behave toward what they call their clients.
Most nonprofits do not hesitate to cut their clients of whatever benefit they get from the organization sometimes with0ut any reason.

I know of a very poorly run not-for-profit. Is there any place to report them or at least have the organizations 990’s reviewed? Can anything be done?
