Thanks for this…it’s so much more powerful when real examples are cited. I’ve sent the link to all of the non profits we serve here in San Diego and I know they will benefit from the generosity and transparency of their peers. May thanks to all who participated as well as the authors!

SHALVA’s Board and staff have already implemented many of these suggestions; it’s great to be validated that we’re right on track to dealing with these difficult times. Let’s hope for better times as soon as possible!
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
One thing that many nonprofits don’t realize is that they can opt out of the state unemployment system and only pay the state on a dollar to dollar basis for unemployment costs. The savings can be significant and the agency eliminates a tax and converts it to a working asset for their agency. Federal law allows all 501 (c) 3s this option. I work with a program that has saved millions for our participating nonprofits. http://www.chooseust.org Every nonprofit should look at this type of savings, especially as states are giving double digit unemployment tax rate increases to employers.
There is a silver lining to recessions. It gives an opportunity to reflect and review - something often put on the back burner during times of growth. My personal experience at one of the largest nonprofits in Pakistan ($15m in annual revenues) was to engage the board, key donors and keep costs low. We managed to grow revenue by 25% during the recesssion as our funding model was based on medium sized pool of medium sized donors. Organizations that were relying on few large donors or many small donors were hit the most. We went to our medium sized donors to get referrals and opened new geographic markets.
A very good blog for those who are looking forward to tackle the recession. The recession is something that affects not only the citizens but the entire country . You have beaten yourself this time, and I appreciate you and hopping for some more informative posts in future. Thank you for sharing great information to us. http://www.snoring-aid.com/

This is very helpful. I am president of my local Free Clinic Board of Directors and am sending a copy to all for discussion at our next meeting.
