Marianne, thank you for profiling the global need for (many!) more innovative inclusive spaces that aim to meet the needs of every BODY in our communities. As a Palo Alto-based non-profit foundation who has enjoyed involvement with various Stanford classes over the years, we are disappointed to have been overlooked in this article. Magical Bridge Foundation is excited about providing multigenerational outdoor spaces and programs that truly build more kind and welcoming communities. For those not yet familiar with us, we invite you to come play with us in one of our playgrounds or visit our website (http://www.magicalbridge.org).
For those focusing on ADA accessible playgrounds, Camden Playground in Janesville Wisconsin is a great resource. Here is some information about this space that has now just begun its new life with a recent renovation. Cullen Slapak is Parks Director and is very knowledgeable.
1. When was it first developed – Opened in 1993
2. Who was the champion – Sherry Kuelz and Todd Long
3. Was it first of its kind in WI – at time of construction it was considered one of the largest and most accessible playground in the country.
4. When was it updated? It was rebuilt in fall of 2016 and spring of 2017. Opened up in summer of 2017.
5. In total how much was been invested. Estimated $600,00 in first build; $500,000 for rebuild.
6. How has design changed? Instead of wood, we used extruded plastic lumber throughout to give the structure a longer life. Also, poured in place rubber was used for the safety surfacing throughout, instead of playground mulch. A new feature in the rebuild is the Liberty Swing, https://www.libertyswing.com.au/.
