Thank you Kevin!
At Trickle Up, we are striving to be in that mid to late stage, proven track record with a credible and (hopefully) smart scaling strategy. One of the biggest challenges we face is getting that smart, multi-year unrestricted funding to grow our capacity to execute on that smart and credible scaling strategy.
Your article is not only helpful to funders, but also to nonprofits seeking funding so that we can frame our narrative in terms of potential and not just in terms of program outputs.
Kevin, thanks so much for this post. I love how you approach the philanthropy from the concept of "investing" in impact, and there are so many great analogies that you point out with "drafting" off of experts in identifying great opportunities. Kind of like putting your cash into a respected mutual fund.
I really hope folks continue to broaden their consciousness about this, and we can move beyond the weird framing where everyone with a $20,000 grant to give thinks it’s only worth doing if you’re willing to invent an entirely new concept/program for them to fund.
