This is a very useful and valuable article. Even though it was published in 2003, the lessons here are worth a lot. Having volunteers carry actual leadership duties and training them for it, following up, etc., are all critical. The New York Cares model is also inspiring. Providing a brokering service between volunteers with skills and organizations that need help is very much worth replicating in other settings.
