Excellent to shine light on this hidden elephant in our living rooms… Many years in African watching nurses rewash gloves which nurses here throw out after just checking our temperature, children sloshing barefoot through excrement as they navigate Kibera-slum paths while we purchase our kids their 6th pair of $60 shoes this year. Deeply grateful for the discussion…
St. Jude’s has one of the most sophisticated fundraising departments with direct access to a wealthy U.S. audience. After several decades of making small grants to groups led by women, and activists around the global struggling for basic human rights, I am reminded that philanthropy is only part of the solution. We need to think broadly about re-imaging not just philanthropy but government, education, investment, and international relations. Democracy, social justice and environmental sustainability will not come without accountability, education and a deeper appreciation of our intertwined future.
