The rise of the Internet offers the opportunity for anyone to post ideas to a blog, web site or YouTube, even to a SSIR forum, that can influence how others act to create a better world in the future. Teaching youth to think through problems, visualize their own solutions, and think through steps to reach those solutions is work that can be done in schools and in non-school tutoring, mentoring and learning organizations. I’ve shared my own ideas on the http://www.tutormentorexchange.net web site since 1998 with the goal of influencing what others do as my primary motivation.
One person’s ideas cannot change the world. However, they can be a spark that ignites the actions of others. If enough people are spurred to write similar articles and support the same vision, change can be influenced. Tools like Social Network Analysis and GIS mapping will be important in documenting growth of influence networks and I look forward to hearing from others who are already harnessing these tools.
Daniel - Your work is an excellent example of how ideas can empower individuals to solve problems. Thank you for sharing the site example. I appreciate you raising the importance of understanding the growth and reach of influence. This is critical component of intentional influence. I too an interested in tools and methods that individuals have found particularly helpful in understanding the growth of influence networks or reach of their influence work. Thank you for your contribution to the conversation.
