Thank you for this insightful analysis and commentary on how to better integrate universities in federal and economic development. Universities and students in particular can benefit from these partnerships to apply knowledge in the “real world”. They better connect with local challenges, providing a sense of engagement and tangible reward. This is a leadership attitude that can only help for any type of career, and moreover could improve our societies. I also came across the “5P” projects from by Boyd Cohen ( http://weareinnovation.org/2014/10/01/the-big-picture-let-there-be-digital-uneven-risks-and-uneven-rewards/ ). These are Public Private Professor People Partnerships. They should be encouraged and funded as part of social innovation programs supported by governments in many countries, and include international hub facilities. I’m looking forward to see more of these initiatives in the future, thanks for the highlight.
I’ve used maps to show areas of high poverty in Chicago, and to overlay those with assets, including anchor organizations, who could support the growth of needed services in specific neighborhoods by drawing other assets together in collective efforts. In this article I show a map of Chicago hospitals, which are spread throughout the region. I also include a strategic plan template that hospital leaders could use to take a lead in the growth of needed youth development programs in the area around each hospital. http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2013/06/chicago-hospitals-face-uncertain-future.html
If each hospital were to develop a strategy focused on helping youth in the area move through school and into jobs, it would be a violence prevention and public health strategy that would help lower the costs of the hospital itself. Universities can take similar roles, since they and hospitals are often the major employers in many neighborhoods.
It is good that the government is lending a helping hand to the various bodies and institutions to aide them with their daily activities and developments. Without any assistance, it is definitely not easy to survive amidst tough competition in the industry. Businesses could be moving out and about in order to accommodate increasing demands and to cope with rising costs amid all that as well. Thus, they need all the help they can get.
