One of the problems with describing the activities of donors is that donations to “charities” can mean many things. Is a donation to endow a chair at a university equivalent to a gift to a foundation or donor-advised fund? Are those the same as contributions to a local social service organization or charter school or a church? Looking at “charitable giving” data in the aggregate washes over the complicated and varied decision-drivers of donors.
