This article is a game-changer for me. It articulates a point of view that I was struggling with over the past year. Thanks so much, Robert, for this excellent article!
Robert Fabricant, you are talking my language. “To achieve sustained impact, designers should strive to shift the fundamental dynamics of development work” Designers might bring skills and knowledge but it is the only a success when it encompasses the deep understanding, perspective, and buy in of those people who will benefit from the design.
I read this article and found myself diving into Design Impact Group and Dalberg with great fervor seeing so many connecting points to areas that have needed to be addressed. Through my work in change management, collaboration and digital transformation, I have advocated for connecting “boots on the ground” to decision makers in every project.
I think your philosophy and approach serves not only social problems but all our problems as we open the lines of communication, build collaboration and get the right information to the right place at the right time.
Anticipating the ripple effect from a design will allow us to make iterative corrections and deliver a sound design that is profoundly impacting.

So strategy + grassroots, very interesting and hopefully a productive combination. Superb stuff.
