As a person who struggled to secure an internship I really appreciae this program, it will improve the job readiness of students when they finish their studies. I wish more companies saw internships as an opportunity to find the right kind of people they want to work in their companies that way finding an internship wont be that difficult as it is currently
I’m glad to see this kind of acknowledgement that students benefit immeasurably from these kinds of invaluable learning experiences that can’t happen in a classroom.
At Big Picture Learning (http://www.bigpicturelearning), we’ve been working for 20 years to provide opportunities like this to low-income students starting in high school.
Great article…I work at Volunteer Alberta, a nonprofit in Alberta, Canada, and we run a bursary supported internship program (the Serving Communities Internship Program, SCiP) that connects post-secondary students with nonprofits in part-time, flexible, internships. The organization increases their capacity and complete a meaningful project and the intern gets $1000 along with a valuable experience. All of these internships have to be meaningful and can not resemble “gopher” opportunities often associated with traditional internship opportunities.
The program has been going for 4 years now and over 2700 students have complete internships so far. Beyond the numbers 2 other key outcomes being achieved by the program is that students see greater possibilities for employment in the nonprofit sector and organizations are increasing their ability to engage new talent effectively.
