We are taking all we learned about savings groups abroad and introducing them to the United States. There are 34 million unbanked in America. We have learned that immigrants have taken banking into their own hands and using traditions of group savings they have brought from their home countries they are saving at a staggering rate. Hotel maids, nursing home aids, poultry plant workers and others working one or two minimum wage jobs are saving $100 or $200 per week. Saving Works - the program I am launching through the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire is exploring how to use immigrants to teach the unbanked who often have no savings how to save using all that we have learned abroad.
