Good article. However: I believe the Embrace infant warmer was not created in India, precisely. But it was created because of the perceived need there. Our understanding is that it was developed by a Stanford GSB student.
Enjoyed this article and I am a big fan of using lean to optimize service delivery. Did want to point out though that Nigeria’s GDP was $521B in 2013 so it would need to spend about half of its GDP on healthcare to match the UK not 20X.
Excellent article Ola. The west has a lot to learn from the disruptive innovation of the poorest nations which is borne out of survival instincts, the purest of motivators.
Jason, GDP must have been a typo, she must have meant to say Budget.
Good point of view. Now the next challenge is how to implement, monitor LEAN management in healthcare specially in Africa, keeping in mind that successful improvement/changes can only be done after proper measurement of the current processes.
Thanks. This article is amazing. to read it reflects situations that happen in my country. clearly you say that budgets intended by the government are not enough to achieve health care. We must evaluate creative ways to manage health with low cost by providing good quality of care.
I am also of the opinion that investing in health education and promotion will also drastically reduce the cost of healthcare especially in low income communities. When the people practice good and safe health habits, it reduces the overall health burden on the lean facilities available thereby driving cost down.
