Thanks Tracie and Jarassa - you have offered some really helpful insights into the practicalities that often stymie efforts to improve the collection and use of data. I work in the conservation sector, where a collaboration of many NGOs and funders has developed guidance (the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation) that includes the points you raise for using data to aid decision-making at all levels of the organisation - such as a standard language, use of forward-looking measures, and technology to gather the data. But progress is patchy. I’m curious to know if you can provide any further insights into the actions that City Year took to improve data literacy at all levels of the organisation.
Excellent! Non-profit data collection should always be about providing data that will be useful for improving our programs and increasing our positive impact for the people we serve.
