I’ve always been disappointed that Gov Big Data seems mostly for engineers or wealthy people to complain about taxes or allocation of resources.
One area Open/Big Gov Data could help would be to help Americans understand how to run for office. Most candidates are recruited by the county parties or through an informal network, and information on how to run for local office can be very difficult to come by (and may not exist online at all).
But, there’s never been any effort to my knowledge to help Americans run for office. Very often there are efforts to help people vote, which is a disheartening message: You’re good enough to vote for us, but not to run.
There has been a transfer of wealth in this country due to domestic and foreign policies by our elected leaders. We see other countries maintain a better standard of living for their citizens, and although we are the wealthiest, we are shamefully at the bottom in many areas.
The civic engagement not being mentioned is the one most needed and least desired by the status quo: Their removal from public office.
And, when you look at what’s occurred in this country, they deserve it.
A very interesting article and I find it very helpful for my project - the impact of the concept for creating shared value i security and defence. Here it is also proved that electronic governance is a way to enhance democracy and citizen participation in decision making and policy. Good food for thought. Thanks to the author.

Bright work for Governments, from Secretaries reaching UN + subsidiary Bodies like IMF, ADB + Boards of Powerful Corporates.
Greed, Power, Fragmentation is leading people to witness ongoing Terrorism happening in France, Syria, North Korea & people live fearfully & on edge.
The better off think corrective mechanisms will emerge from Civil Society + NGOs who are too ill equipped to deliver large meaningful outcomes. Therefore, former well of Bureaucrats, knowing insides are bound to one day soon unite to save People from bad Governance.
There are also some interesting moves based in the US that have an international flavour looking at how citizens can participate directly in voting for particular bills. A number of organisations could be mentioned however the one I will mention here is democracy.earth.
