I thought the prevailing orthodoxy when helping the poor was, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Another principal taught by one of my key mentors, Robert Payton: “First, Do No Harm.”
If you were looking for other examples to support your point, you could examine the way U.S. goverment welfare programs which encourage lack of work and having children wihout married parents have devastated U.S. inner-cities.
Your comments just affirm that idea—help people learn how to help themselves.
