Yes, indeed, someone, be they government or individual should come by to help organise the innovation ecosystem in their area as a catalyst to spark off innovation. There should be a vehicle for innovation inclined people to gather and sit down to better discourse problems that affect all and sundry. If without the vehicle, then there will be very little focusing on solving problems as when concerned people are left to their devices there will be no solutions on the table. In our real world, if there is no money, nothing gets done so let us hope that more people will offer their services to help organise innovation ecosystem that preferabbly be state funded as well.
Terry, you bring up an important issue that can stand as a barrier to local ecosystem development, namely, the idea that local innovators need someone to put financial resources on the table as a condition for working together to strengthen their ecosystem. I have seen cases in which ecosystem strengthening work has been initiated and facilitated by outside actors (like the case from the Philippines), but have also seen cases in which local innovators have started to collaborate with a few of their peers (forming peer-learning groups, for example) with no outside facilitation or funds, though they have invested their time. The case I mentioned briefly from Philadelphia is of that second type; in that case, local sustainable business leaders started out by organizing peer learning and networking events among themselves. It was only much later, once many more businesses had joined the ecosystem, that local government started to play a role in supporting this effort. So that’s just to say that while early support from the government is certainly helpful, it’s possible to build a local innovation ecosystem from the bottom-up as well!
