Competitive Advantage — all social change organizations have one; but yours may not be what you think it is.
It’s unfortunate that social sector organizations tend not to think about competitive advantage as it relates to social impact and growth. Far too many nonprofit organizations and foundations view competition as something reserved for the for-profit world, and many think their competitive advantage is simply a rephrasing of their mission statement (i.e. our advantage is that we serve those in need). But the fact is that all organizations are competing for something—whether it’s market share, public policy, funding, or more attention from clients or donors.

As a social sector leader, you need to learn how to think competitively. This 90-minute SSIR Live! program will provide participants with a wealth of tools that will make it easier to define your organization’s competitive advantage and help you to redefine your strategic roadmap. We will explore how using a framework and asking the right questions can make this process easier and more effective. Along the way, we will share a detailed case study of how one microfinance nonprofit defined its competitive advantage, transformed and grew its offerings, and advanced its mission. We will also explore other examples from the social sector of different organizations who successfully defined their competitive advantage and crafted their success stories.
This SSIR Live! session will provide critical skills, including…
- How to understand what competitive advantage is
- How to define your organization’s competitive advantage
- How to run an exercise with a team or organization on using a competitive advantage framework
