This complimentary SSIR Live! program will explore:

  • Business models and funding sources for tech nonprofit startups
  • Barriers to scaling and sustaining tech nonprofits
  • Bright spots and emerging best practices
  • Opportunities for nonprofit startups and their funders to grow and sustain impact

Social enterprises face challenges in attracting funding and developing sustainable business models to scale their impact. Recent research by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Rita Allen Foundation explores business models in the field of civic tech, including organizations that use the power of technology to better connect citizens with government. It captures insights from interviews with nearly 50 startup leaders, including founders of for-profit and nonprofit civic tech organizations, as well as heads of foundations, venture capital firms, and other prominent voices in the field.

This SSIR Live! webinar will help nonprofits and funders identify and pursue new approaches for growing their impact, and will examine how nonprofit tech organizations are evolving their efforts in more sustainable ways. The webinar will provide examples of civic tech organizations that faced seemingly overwhelming challenges but successfully scaled, and will share how they did so. In addition to exploring best practices for organizations, it will highlight insights for funders to better shape their giving practices and encourage long-term success.

  Expert Speakers:
Jonathan Sotsky, Knight Foundation director of strategy and assessment, and Jonathan Kartt, programs and evaluation, Rita Allen Foundation, will be joined by two leaders in the nonprofit tech sector to discuss the findings of their recent research and its implications for nonprofit tech sustainability.
