The Giving Code Part 1: A Changing Landscape for Giving

February 28, 2017 at 11:00 am Pacific
Presented by Heather McLeod Grant & Alexa Cortes Culwell

Part One of The Giving Code webinar series focuses in detail on important new research on philanthropists and community-based nonprofits. Using Silicon Valley as a case study, the research examines the mindset and approaches of today’s donors, as well as the new vehicles for giving that they rely on. The study points to future directions in philanthropy around the country. Through discussions with more than 100 high net worth individuals and their advisors, and analysis of quantitative data, the co-authors uncovered an implicit Giving Code: approaches that lead to disconnects between donors and community-based nonprofits. In this webinar, the authors will identify and explore the gaps in knowledge, networks, language, and mindsets between donors and nonprofits—and the need for empathy on both sides.

The Giving Code Part 2: Solutions for Bridging the Gaps

March 7, 2017 at 11:00 am Pacific
Presented by Heather McLeod Grant, Alexa Cortes Culwell, Kathy Kwan & Camille Llanes-Fontanilla

Part Two of The Giving Code webinar series focuses on what philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, and intermediary organizations can do about the disconnects uncovered in the “Giving Code” research—and how they can achieve better communication and form long-term relationships. Philanthropists will learn practical strategies and ideas for how to rethink their approaches to enhance their giving to community-based organizations and issues. Nonprofit managers will learn some of the keys to attracting high net worth donors to their causes and to meeting their requirements. The co-authors will be joined by special guests who will share their real-life experiences navigating the barriers and gaps identified in the report, including Camille Llanes-Fontanilla, executive director of Somos Mayfair, a community-based organization located in San Jose, California. The other special guest is Kathy Kwan, a distinguished Silicon Valley philanthropist who is the president and director for the Eustace-Kwan Family Foundation.
