Realizing Democracy: Turning Participation Into Power

In this informative and inspiring discussion, “Realizing Democracy: Turning Participation Into Power,” we explore the power relationships between civil society, the public sector, and market forces in American democracy, and ask how civil society groups should organize people to change the rules and conditions by which elites currently prosper. Lissy Romanow, executive director of Momentum; Sochie Nnaemeka, director of the New York Working Families Party; and Joseph McKellar, co-director of PICO California, share how their organizations approach these questions, discuss how COVID-19 is changing their work, and explore what role civil society will need to play in realizing a multi-racial, 21st-century, American democracy.

SSIR is proud to join the Ford Foundation in presenting “Realizing Democracy: Turning Participation Into Power” as part of The Realizing Democracy Project. SSIR also partnered with the Ford Foundation to produce the 24-page Realizing Democracy supplement that appeared in the Winter 2020 issue of our magazine.
