Communication in a New Era of Social Change

Is it possible we’re doing communications work wrong? Are foundations and nonprofits stubbornly stuck using 20th-century strategies in a 21st-century age of participation? Nearly 25 years into this new century, some nonprofits and foundations are in the vanguard of moving beyond “getting the word out.”

This article series, presented in partnership with The Communications Network, will share stories, strategies, and lessons from forward-thinking foundations and nonprofits that have begun evolving the way they think and do communications and how it’s changed their work. Their original case studies explore why community building is essential now, what it means to the field, and what’s changed since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Together, the stories highlight why more social sector organizations should refocus their communications on building bridges and trust, creating more inclusive communities of listening and storytelling, and expressing deep humility. Recognizing that no organization can solve a social problem by itself, communicating and creating trustworthy, meaningful connections with others is essential.
