Part I:

Developing a Public Interest Communications Strategy: Moving Beyond Awareness for Belief and Behavior Change
Date: Monday, October 29, 2018
Time: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. PT / 2-3:30 p.m. ET

Public interest communications requires us to move beyond awareness campaigns and communication on behalf of the interests of a particular organization. Instead, it requires us to use the best of what we know from academia and practice to design campaigns that transcend the interest of any one organization for belief or behavior change on a particular issue. Public interest communications has been used to drive internal change within an organization—such as culture change, diversity and inclusion, innovation and collaboration—as well as changes in society, including the passage of marriage equality, lowering youth smoking rates, increasing water conversation within communities, and historic campaigns for civil rights.

This section of the program will provide participants with a four-question framework for developing a strategic communications plan. This framework uses systems thinking, human-centered design, and insights from behavioral, cognitive, and social science to design effective campaigns. Participants will leave with an applicable framework that can easily be adopted into their workflow and shared with their colleagues. This session will introduce you to public interest communications, provide actionable insights from research, bright spots from the field, and hands-on practice to help you apply the framework.

The Science of Story Building

While we know a great deal about why stories work, we don’t focus enough about what makes one story more compelling and effective—more memorable, sharable, and inspiring—than another. In this session, we will share an applicable framework for building and selecting compelling stories that will help you communicate complex challenges and help you drive engagement and action with your work. In this second part you will learn how to apply these insights to your own work, and tell stories that reflect the best of what science teaches us.
