A statue of a smiling peanut honoring former US President Jimmy Carter stands in the statesman’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. The second-tallest statue of a peanut in the world, the 13-foot monument was erected during his 1976 presidential campaign as a nod to his time as a peanut farmer. Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his tireless work to promote democracy and human rights around the world through his nonprofit The Carter Center. With Carter’s trademark grin, the nut statue captures the late president’s goodwill and commitment to living as a public servant well after his presidency ended in 1981.
