Orchestrators of Change and the Journey to Transformation

What does creating systemic change actually look like? What are the hallmarks of social innovations that bridge the gap from theory to real transformation? What is the role of system orchestrators—the dot-connectors, harmonizers, and so-called “silo-busters” that weave complex ecosystems together—in creating change?

In this follow-up to the “Social Innovation and the Journey to Transformation” supplement, the Skoll Foundation and its partners demystify how social innovators shift systems through collective action. We share two case studies: the global movement to professionalize community health workers, and international efforts to mitigate deforestation by securing land rights for local communities. We also offer a call to action to mainstream the field of social innovation as an essential step in accelerating responses to mounting global threats.

Our hope is that these stories and behind-the-scenes lessons will inspire innovators, civil society, government, and the private sector to learn from and adapt these playbooks to drive greater impact.
