For the past seven years, Walid al-Hattab (center) has cooked and distributed soup to those in need every day during the holy month of Ramadan, in Gaza City, Palestine. Food insecurity is a mounting problem in Palestine, which faces endless Israeli assaults that have decimated its land and agriculture. According to a 2022 World Food Programme poll, 63 percent of people in the Gaza Strip, which has been under a continuous blockade by Israel and Egypt since 2007, are food insecure. Al-Hattab’s soup-making is a reminder that simple acts of charity have profound impact at the individual level.
