A Hindu pilgrim takes a free eye test on January 12, 2026, at a transit camp in Kolkata, India, on her way to the Makar Sankranti festival. The occasion, celebrated by Hindus typically on January 14, is dedicated to the sun god, Surya, and marks the zodiacal transition of the sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn and the longer days to come. Such transit camps host millions of festivalgoers and offer them free medical services, temporary shelter, and other amenities, before they travel on to Gangasagar, the mouth of the Ganges, to take a sacred bath.
