This SSIR Live! two-part webinar-workshop on design thinking is developed, facilitated, and presented by Thomas Both, Director of the Designing for Social Systems Program at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school), and Nadia Roumani, Director of Stanford University’s Effective Philanthropy Lab and the Senior Designer at the Designing for Social Systems Program.

Part I:

Design Thinking for the Social Sector: A Human-Centered Approach to Discovering Solutions with Impact
Date: Wednesday, December 6, 2017
Time: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. PT / 2-3:30 p.m. ET

How do you gain new insights that support your innovative and more effective solutions and strategies? How can an experimental prototype-driven approach reduce risk and lead you to more effective interventions?

Design thinking helps us understand and respond to the needs of specific people, question assumptions, reframe old problems, and experiment to advance solutions. This program is focused on employing human-centered design—adapted and expanded beyond its product and service design roots—for social impact and systems change. This session will introduce you to a design thinking process, and have you actively practice it. We will focus on ways to gain insight from human conversations (design research), and how that can help you discover new opportunities to make more meaningful impact. Hands-on practice and a case study example will demonstrate how new insight helps reframe problems, and thus opens up unexpected and more effective solutions. Further discussion will introduce prototyping as a tool of inquiry: a way to test concepts, assumptions, and hunches. Doing so helps you learn before investing resources into a pilot program.


Part II:

Design Thinking for the Social Sector: Integrating Design and Systems Thinking

Date: Wednesday, December 13, 2017

Where do you start when working in a complex multi-stakeholder system? Which “user” should you focus on first? How do you decide what to build after uncovering multiple opportunity spaces that all seem viable and important?

In this session, you will see how design thinking can be integrated with systems thinking to develop effective strategies for complex social systems work. When used together, the two create a synergy: Design thinking is action-oriented, deeply human, and experimental, while systems thinking is strategic and holistic. Using them together, one can be enterprising while expending efforts with purpose; reach meaningful human insights in the context of the dynamics of the system; and test ideas in the world quickly with the intent to learn and iterate. Demonstrated via a case study, you will learn how to move between systems thinking—which helps you see the larger picture and consider where you might have greatest leverage—and design thinking—which connects directly with beneficiaries and stakeholders—to gain nuanced understanding and insight. In this part, Jeff Mohr, cofounder and CEO of Kumu and advisor for strategy and governance of The Omidyar Group, will join Thomas Both and Nadia Roumani as a guest speaker.
