US philanthropists are making plenty of large gifts ($10 million or more), but 80 percent of them go to institutions that are already well funded or that do little to improve social ills. According to the cover story in the winter 2016 issue of Stanford Social Innovation Review, “Making Big Bets for Social Change,” just 20 percent of big bets go to nonprofit social change organizations in conservation, human services, and economic development.
